SSB 1103 – Extending driver’s license and ID card renewal period
COMMITTEE ACTION:
SSB 1103 amends Code section 321.190 to extend the validity of ID cards from five years to eight years, with a corresponding fee increase from $5 to $8. In addition, the current provision that provides for issuance of a non-expiring ID card to those 70 or over is stricken to comply with federal REAL ID requirements. Code section 321.196 is amended to extend the validity of a driver’s license from five years to eight years for licenses issued to those between the ages of 18 and 70. The fee for a driver’s license will be based on the number of years it is valid—the same as under current law. The Department of Transportation may adopt emergency rules to implement the renewal provisions, and to provide for a transition from five-year to eight-year renewal periods. The bill takes effect upon enactment. [2/25: 12-0 (Feenstra excused)]
